Medical Director
The Medical Director is responsible for the day to day management of the medical services. This includes all relevant operational, developmental and strategic matters. The Medical Director is non practicing physician appointed by the CMO and CEO. The duties of the Medical Director include, but not be limited to:
A. Managing the medical staff office
B. Lead the effective management of medical staff and ensure that they deliver effective, safe and high quality care to patients
C. Managing non-physician staff within the medical services
D. Developing and maintaining departmental policies, procedures and protocols
E. Overseeing the administration of physician appointment and reappointment of medical staff
F. Ensuring adequate integration between the different medical services as well as between the medical services and other hospital functions
G. Maintaining physician’s files and ensuring completeness of records
H. Ensuring that medical services are meeting established targets and goals
I. Overseeing the completion of physician performance evaluations in a timely fashion
J. Ensuring that medical staff are in compliance with their licensing requirements and continuing medical education
K. Supervising the day-to-day performance of the Medical Staff Office and the hospital’s quality improvement personnel
L. Performing administrative functions related to the medical staff such as approving purchasing requests and human resources documents as outlined in the hospital’s delegation of authority matrix
M. Addressing complaints, grievances and risk reports related to the medical services
N. Working closely with Medical School representatives to ensure proper administration and management of medical students training at the hospital
O. Preparing medical staff reports for the CMO and the CEO
P. Advise the CMO and CEO on issues related to medical services including internal and external factors that may impact the hospital or its services
Q. Participating in medical staff meeting on as needed basis
R. Developing in coordination with Finance Department medical staff departmental budgets
S. Managing departmental budgets
T. Taking an active role in promoting quality, performance improvement, patient safety and infection control
U. Participating in hospital accreditation initiatives
V. Overseeing the proper administration of performance evaluation of non-physicians within the medical staff organization
W. Representing the hospital at eternal meetings and enhancing collaboration with Al-Najah University
X. Performing other duties as assigned by the CMO or the CEO
Qualification and Training
Graduate from an accredited medical school
Additional training in management (e.g. MBA, leadership development programs, certification…etc.)
Record of continuous professional development
Knowledge
Good knowledge of medical staff governance practices and issues
Understanding of physician recruitment and retention practices
Knowledge of quality improvement, infection prevention and risk management practices
Knowledge of accreditation standards (e.g. JCI, CAP, ACGME…etc.)
Knowledge of medical staff bylaws and rules and regulations
Experience
Ten years of experience post medical certification
Clinical leadership experience preferred
Evidence of successful change management initiatives
Experience with hospital accreditation
Experience working in an academic health setting preferred
Skills
Excellent organizational skills
Excellent leadership and team building skills
Ability to motivate staff and achieve goals
Understanding of hospital management aspects outside medical services (e.g. finance, human resources…etc.)
Effective communication skills
Fluency in English
Good computer skills using Microsoft Office products and other software packages
