Women Economic Empowerment Advocacy Specialist

Eligibility criteria

Minimum age: 22 years old. Applicants must be nationals of or legal residents in the country of assignment.

Description of task

Under the overall guidance of the UN Women Special Representative and the direct supervision of the UN Women Women Economic Empowerment Portfolio Manager, the UNV Advocacy Specialist will:

  • Support the Women Economic Empowerment team in developing an advocacy action plan for the Women Economic Empowerment portfolio with focus on the regional programme, with different stakeholders, and based on the joint programme priorities.
  • Support the Women Economic Empowerment team in designing, implementing and assessing evidence-based advocacy initiatives and campaigns, in collaboration with private, public and civil society actors. This includes preparations of related papers, events, communications, media, outreach and other related interventions, in line with programmatic priority areas of intervention, including women’s access to decent work opportunities and retention in the labour market.
  • Support the Women Economic Empowerment team in documenting results and recommendations of the advocacy initiatives and producing relevant research documents, including fact sheets, summary reports, infographics, stories and messages for dissemination, in coordination with UN Women regional and country team members in English and Arabic languages.
  • Identify storylines for publication and media posts, and review outreach content in Arabic and English for different advocacy events and initiatives;
  • Support the team in conducting evidence-based and policy-oriented research, including through literature reviews, focus groups discussions and interviews, on Women economic Empowerment priorities, strategies, policies, procedures, plans etc. at the national to inform the development of different reports, analyses, assessments etc. in collaboration with a variety of partners.
  • Support the team in compilation of results-oriented data and information from implementing partners and national/ international actors to inform the development of reports, success stories and other relevant papers.
  • Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Required degree level: Master degree or equivalent
  • Education - Additional Comments:
  • Master’s degree in economic studies, gender, communications, international relations, or any related development fields.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in combination with 2 additional years of qualifying experience will be accepted in lieu of the master’s degree.

Required experience: 72 Months

Experience remark:

  • At least 6 years of professional work experience in advocacy and/or communications related to gender equality and women’s empowerment, including economic empowerment is required for Bachelor degree and 4 years for Master degree. .
  • At least 4 years of professional experience in designing and implementing advocacy initiatives and tools within the national or regional context.
  • At least 4 years of professional work experience in socio-economic and gender research and analytical work is required.
  • At least 2 years of previous experience in working with UN agencies is an asset.
  • Other desired/mandatory required technical knowledge
  • Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills;
  • Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development;
  • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel;
  • Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment;
  • Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines;
  • Desirable: valid national driver’s license and proven ability to drive manual gear 4x4 over rough terrain; (if not applicable, delete)
  • Sound security awareness;
  • Have affinity with or interest in gender equality and women’s empowerment, women’s economic empowerment, volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System.

  • English(Mandatory), Level - Fluent
  • Arabic(Mandatory), Level - Fluent

Area of expertise: Development programme/project administration, Gender equality and the advancement of women

Area of expertise details:

  • At least 4 years of professional experience in designing and implementing advocacy initiatives and tools within the national or regional context.
  • At least 4 years of professional work experience in socio-economic and gender research and analytical work is required.
