Registered Dietitian
Job Summary:
The Dietitian provides nutrition consultation and education to patients and their families who are screened at nutrition risk, patients identified to have nutritional risks and/or patients referred by a physician or another clinical staff member. The dietitian is a member of the multidisciplinary team who serves as the patient’s nutrition advocate and ensures that the patient’s nutrition needs are being met
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct a nutrition assessment on patients identified at risk or those referred by the clinical team·for all age groups and clinical conditions
- Select appropriate assessment tools and procedures to meet patient needs ·
- Review dietary intake for factors that affect health conditions and nutritional risk including ·physical, psychosocial and behavioral factors
- Evaluates patient and family’s knowledge, readiness to learn, and potential for changing behaviors ·
- Document assessment findings and develops an individualized nutritional plan of care ·
- Make daily rounds on inpatients; as required by the care plan ·
- Prioritize identified nutrition problems for optimal patient health, recovery from illness, management ·of chronic disease, or disease prevention
- Initiate medical nutrition therapy to patients if indicated by patient requirements and clinical protocol ·
- Monitor patient’s response to nutrition therapy plan and adjust plan accordingly ·
- Educate and counsel patients and families on nutritional issues, either individually or in groups ·
- Communicate individual nutritional care plans to other health care providers as a member of a health care team ·
- Provide outpatient and inpatient consultations to patients and their families as needed ·
- Act as a resource for medical and clinical staff when it comes to nutritional managements of patients ·
- Work closely with food services team to ensure compliance with food safety standards as well compliance with nutritional therapy plans
- Monitor food services’ compliance with regulations, standards, policies and procedures ·
- In collaboration with other sections and departments, develop educational material for patients ·and their families
- Supervise student trainees and volunteers ·
- Develop and execute educational and training programs to staff ·
- Develop and maintain dietary policies, procedures, and guidelines ·
- Maintains professional development and growth ·
- Complete all required training and meet competencies as assigned ·
- Develop and maintain service Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) ·
- Participate in hospital-wide quality improvement initiatives ·
- Participate in research initiatives at the hospital and the university ·
- Participate in departmental meetings ·
- Comply with hospital policies and procedures ·
- Represent the hospital in external meetings ·
- Perform other duties as assigned ·
Required Educational and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, or an equivalent field ·
- Additional training or certification in the field of clinical nutrition preferred ·
- At least three (3) years of clinical nutrition experience in a hospital or similar healthcare setting ·
Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:
- Strong knowledge of clinical nutrition theory and practices ·
- Knowledge of food services delivery including menu planning, inventory management and program monitoring ·
- Knowledge of local resources that may support the nutritional program at the hospital ·
- Knowledge of nutrient analysis ·
- Excellent counseling skills and ability to work with people with variable learning levels ·
- Ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal form to patients and clinical staff ·
- Good computer skills including the use of health information systems and Microsoft Office Products ·
- Good interpersonal skills to establish productive working relationships with multidisciplinary team and support services
- Ability to organize tasks and function independently ·
- Good degree of flexibility ·
